I selected the part of New York City around our office - which includes Union Square and other places in the area where I run errands - and scaled the map so that the streets were 1" wide so they could be blocked out with painter's tape. After breaking up the desired image into printable letter-size templates, I etched the lines onto the desk, taped off the streets, and used a sanding block to sand the wood veneer down to the bare particleboard, before adding a final coat of varnish..
